Compensation:

  • Third Year Co-op: $30.00/hr
  • Fourth Year Co-op: $33.50/hr

Location: Nelson, BC (this position requires regular onsite work in Nelson)
Industry: Precision-engineered ion sources and related particle accelerator solutions
Fees: D-Pace will reimburse all co-op institution fees

Areas of focus: Responsible for developing and testing machine learning approaches for ion source control, performance optimization, and predictive monitoring through hands-on experimentation, data analysis, and prototype development.

Position Overview

D-Pace is looking for a senior-level (3rd or 4th year) student to take on projects associated with machine learning (ML) control of our ion sources.  The student will be developing and testing ML methods to improve ion source performance, ease of use, and operability. Students will be combining hands-on prototyping and experimentation with offline development, analysis and ideation.

Projects

D-Pace has several projects in this vein, depending on interest and experiences. Typically, we have a list of projects to choose from

  • High speed arc detection: System for fast transient arcing events
  • Beam Trip Prediction: Developing techniques to predict beam trips and arcing event from time-series data
  • Offline Beam Simulation: Developing a surrogate behavioural model for offline testing of techniques and approaches
  • Longevity Filament Experiments – Setup, Data gathering, Initial Analysis: Possible opportunity for co-authorship

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, develop and test prototype ML models
  • Evaluate ML models on a fully instrumented Ion source
  • Conduct prototype testing and performance testing and document the results.
  • Assist in instrumentation design and implementation (circuits, PCBs, OTS hardware integration)
  • Assist in data acquisition, analysis, and processing
  • Utilize electronic lab equipment to test and troubleshoot analog and digital circuits
  • Manage your project, including status update meetings and design reviews
  • Maintain accurate logs of experimental configurations, operating parameters, and experimental results
  • Documentation management including electronic communication, electronic files, and test reports
  • Safe, reliable, organized, and detail oriented

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Level: 3rd or 4th year students
  • Discipline: Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Software/Computer Engineering, Computer Science
  • Currently legally entitled to work in Canada.

Required Experience

  • A strong python background, knowledge, and experience
  • Experience troubleshooting and operating complex systems
  • Good documentation skills for writing and editing reports, and procedures.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanics and/or electronics with a craftmanship mindset

Preferred Experience

  • PLC Design & Programming knowledge and/or experience
  • PCB and electronics hardware design
  • Experience with Bayesian optimization
  • Knowledge of accelerator fundamentals

  • Attention to Detail: You demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness in experimentation, data collection, testing, coding, and documentation activities. You understand that consistency and attention to detail are critical to reliable results and system performance.
