Avalanche Energy Selects D-Pace as Ion Source Partner for Next-Generation Fusion Reactor

IS.ECR-010

Challenge

Avalanche’s Orbitron—a desk-sized micro fusion reactor—utilizes a novel electrostatic and magnetic confinement approach to deliver controlled fusion in an extremely compact form factor. As the technology progresses, the latest Orbitron design requires higher proton beam current injection into ultra-low-pressure environments to sustain fusion reactions.

Approach

To meet these advanced performance needs, Avalanche turned to D-Pace’s Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source (licensed from Neutron Therapeutics)—a powerful, high-current beam solution.

This is the second ion source Avalanche has purchased from D-Pace. The earlier Orbitron prototypes, developed in 2023, used D-Pace’s filament-powered positive/negative volume cusp ion source (licenced from TRIUMF). Building on that success, D-Pace delivered a tailored ECR solution capable of significantly higher beam currents—critical to advancing Avalanche’s core fusion technology.

D-Pace also provided beam optics simulations and design support for the system’s ion beam line, ensuring optimal integration with Avalanche’s architecture.

Result

The ECR ion source has now been fully installed at Avalanche’s facility, with experimentation already underway as of May 2025.

“D-Pace’s ECR ion source was the perfect match for the demanding requirements of our next-generation Orbitron,” said Robin Langtry, CEO of Avalanche Energy. “We’ve been extremely impressed not only by the product but also by the level of customization, beam optics support, and ongoing collaboration provided by the D-Pace team. Their expertise has significantly accelerated our path to scalable fusion.”

The two companies continue to collaborate closely as Avalanche scales toward commercial viability. For more information about Avalanche Energy, visit www.avalanchefusion.com.
